Watch the batter when in the outfield. Right-handed batters hit more balls to left field. Alternatively, a left handed batter will generally hit towards the right field. Knowing that will help you anticipate the ball.

Always use a broken in glove. If you are lucky and have a new glove for your season, you should take a few weeks beforehand to work that glove a lot. Catch balls to help loosen the glove up. Your glove can block the sun’s glare as you catch a ball. Putting the mitt over your eyes blocks some of the brightness while allowing you to see the ball.
To maximize the stretch when you play first base, place a foot under your throwing hand right on the base. Of course, you must keep one foot (opposite your throwing hand) on the base. Stretch your other foot towards the incoming ball and put your glove into position to catch it.
Do not reach across the body when catching a grounder. Instead, try to shuffle either left or right, getting your gloved hand positioned right in front of the oncoming ball. Otherwise, when catching the ball, the baseball might only hit the edge of your glove.
If you are pitching, never forget that once you release the ball, it is in play. Even when the catcher throws it back, it is still in play. Quick defensive skills are necessary when you make contact, and you must react quickly to keep yourself protected all the time.
If your swing isn’t fast enough, consider choking up on the bat a little. That means you move your hands up away a little from the bat’s base in order to position your hands a bit closer to the barrel of the bat. The result is a quicker, more compact swing. It may help you keep at speed with a pitcher that might be a bit too quick for you.
To avoid committing catcher’s interference, remain in position until you catch the pitch. Whenever a batter hits the catcher’s glove with the bat, the umpire will call catcher’s interference and the batter will get a free base.
