Organic gardening is a hobby of great patience and a green thumb. It’s an enjoyable hobby where you can grow your own healthy food. It is challenging, but not as hard as you may think. Read the following tips to discover how to begin gardening like a pro.
Strawberries are a great plant to grow in any organic garden, especially if you happen to have kids or any strawberry lover in your home. For kids, there are few things as fun as picking fruit fresh from the garden. Your children will be much more interesting in helping out if they know they’ll get to enjoy some tasty strawberries.
To keep your houseplants happy during the day, your thermostat should be set anywhere between 65 and 75 degrees. Young plants need a temperature within that specific range to grow. If this is a little too warm for your house, grow your organic plants under a heat lamp.
Before planting your favorite perennials, you must first prepare the ground. Simply use a spade or small shovel to get under the grass or turf and flip it over. Then, using wood chips, cover the area to a depth of three or four inches. You want to then give the area about a couple of weeks, then you want your new perennials planted by digging into it.
Make gardening efficient. Have your tools laid out in an orderly way so you do not have to search for them. Have all of tools you will need for the day before you head out your garden. When you are finished, put them away neatly for the next time. You can use a tool belt for this purpose, or choose pants that contain several large pockets.
Spacing is an important factor to consider when planting your garden. You will most likely underestimate how much space plants will need as they grow. Space is necessary not only for physical growth but also to help keep air circulation flowing within your garden. If you put enough thought into your garden, you will enjoy more impressive results.
Don’t let your organic gardening tasks stack up for very long. No matter what your schedule is like, you should be able to fit in small things that will help you avoid having an overwhelming amount of work all at once. Even if you’re just taking the dog for a walk, bend down and pick a few weeds.
Laundry Basket
Use an aged laundry basket when you want to collect your produce. The basket will make a great strainer when you wash your vegetables. You can clean and rinse the harvest when it is the laundry basket and the water will go out of the holes.
When you’re making a compost pile, you should use fresh and dried plants to get it started. Your green material can be made up of produce waste, used floral arrangements, lawn cuttings, leaves, and other yard waste. Dried plant material, however, can include items such as cardboard, sawdust and shredded paper. Never use ashes, meat, charcoal, diseased plants or carnivorous animal manure in your compost pile.
Is there a natural way to kill weeds? To control the growth of weeds, all you need is last week’s Sunday paper. Like any other plant, weeds need to be exposed to the sun. When you cover weeds with newspaper layers, they suffocate due to lack of light. Newspapers break down over time, and they make a great addition to compost. Covering the newspaper with mulch will help your garden to be more pleasing to the eye.
Slugs are a nuisance that can be easily remedied with the use of an organic beer tramp. Place a container in the ground so that the lip is even with the soil surface. Fill that with beer just under an inch from the top of your jar. The scent of the beer will bait the slugs into the jar and they will become trapped.
You can make a raised bed with untreated wood, brick, or stone. Choose wood that is naturally resistant to rot and is untreated. Cypress, locust and cedar usually work best. Don’t use treated wood in a garden for vegetables because the chemicals contained in them can leak into the ground. If the ground cover you’ve used already contained treated lumber, line it with a barrier of some form.
It is a good idea to get organic garden certification so as to reaffirm your claims that your products really are organic. This will result in generating more sales and creating a loyal customer base.
Organic gardening allows you to work hard and enjoy the fruits of your labor. This hobby allows you to use the land and grow delicious food. If you are willing to put in the effort and if you follow the tips, you can become a great organic gardener.
